i used 4 tries and got the answer. it's impossible to have only 3 tries :D (since the question's "how you managed to find the counterfeit coin", i don't see why not) within the stated number of tries, who cares! it's how i found the coin, not what if it doesn't balance?

that's a primary school question. i'm sure everyone learnt this in primary school. as for my algorithm, i don't see any point cos it's exactly the same as the correct algorithm for the pattern!
